One of my closest childhood friends and I experienced a period of estrangement during the early months of the Covid pandemic. While we were extremely close for much of our life, it became unexpectedly harder to reach my friend as 2020 wore on. I knew they were struggling with depression, but I didn't realize how poorly they were coping. It got to the point where I would call but wouldn't reach my friend for months. However, at one point, out of the blue, my friend called while I was working a busy shift in the clinic. Instead of acknowledging my missed calls and attempts to connect, my friend launched into a series of accusations about my lack of care or empathy for them. I was obviously hurt, but in that moment, I completely lost my temper—leading to both of us saying things we now regret. After this call we stopped talking for a period. This left me re-evaluating the situation and deciding that I must try to resolve our dispute so I could be there for my friend. I wrote an apology letter and expressing my wish to reconcile. To my joy, my friend responded in kind and we decided to meet up to share our feelings and mend fences. Since that talk, our friendship has been stronger than ever. From this situation, I learned the value of grace, the power of communication, and the joy of forgiveness.
What makes this an effective response: This response candidly shares a painful conflict in which the applicant made mistakes and learned from them. An authentic personal narrative such as this provides a solid foundation to connect to how the applicant hopes to apply this lesson in a future clinical context.
